The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team overcame a slow start to post a 74-63 win over Minnesota State for its first win of the season Saturday (Nov. 19).
The Huskies (1-1) missed their first seven shots of the game before freshman Ben Stelzer made a jumper seven minutes into the half.
"I don’t know what our problem was at the beginning," said head coach Kevin Luke. "We switched players, and we were able to get things going."
Tech would battle back from the eight point deficit, and sophomore Alex Culy drained a 3-pointer at the 8:18 to tie the game at 14. Culy would score nine points in the first half to help the Huskies to a 30-26 advantage at halftime.
The Huskies found their shooting touch at the break and shot 55-percent from the floor in the second half and lead by as many as 16 points with 4:24 remaining in the game.
The Mavericks struggled shooting throughout the game and finished 20-59 (34%).
Senior Mike Hojnacki shot 8-13 from the floor and 2-3 from deep to score a game-high 18 points for the Huskies.
Sophomore Austin Armga added 14 points, including a game-high 10 from the free throw line.
Freshman Ben Stelzer scored a career-high 13 points and dished out a game-high three assists.
Freshman Kelly Madison came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points for MSU.
Tech will host UW-Parkside Tuesday (Nov. 22) at 7:00 p.m.
