MARQUETTE -- The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team stumbled following up its home opening victory, falling 87-53 to Lewis University on Tuesday (Nov. 15) at the Berry Events Center.

NMU (1-1) struggled in the first half offensively, allowing Lewis (1-0) to go on a 15-0 run during a three minute stretch and take a 33-16 lead with just over five minutes to play in the half.

The Flyers continued their streaky shooting and limited the Wildcats second chances to take a 23 point, 47-24 lead into the half.

Foul trouble plagued the ‘Cats in the second half, preventing them from making a cut into the Flyers lead. Lewis took advantage of NMU’s foul trouble, converting on 6-12 from the foul line and netted 10 second chance points as well in the second half.

NMU finished the game shooting just 32.7 percent from the field and shooting 21.7 (5-23) percent from beyond the arc.

Freshman forward Haki Stampley led the ‘Cats with 16 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. Stampley scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half. Junior forward TJ Cameron chipped in 12 points and three rebounds.

Lewis was led by Mantas Dubauskas and Matt Toth, who combined to score 34 of the team's 87 points, scoring 22 and 12 respectively.

The Flyers won the battle of the boards at 47-27, cleaning up 34 defensive rebounds and limiting the ‘Cats five second-chance plays.

NMU forced 16 Lewis turnovers on six team steals.

The ‘Cats are off until Thanksgiving weekend, when they travel to the University of Indianapolis Tournament (Nov. 25-26).
