HOUGHTON -- (Courtesy of MTU Athletics) Senior Lynn Giesler and junior Sam Hoyt each scored a team-high 13 points to lead the No. 3 Michigan Tech women's basketball team to a 64-52 win over Madonna Saturday (Nov. 12). The game was the regular season-opener for both schools.
Madonna controlled the tempo early and started the game on a 9-0 run over the first 4:30 of play. The Huskies fought back and tied the game at 13 midway through the first half. Tech followed up with a 12-2 run before posting a 27-22 lead at the break.
"I thought we had some good open looks at the beginning of the game, but we just couldn't make them," said head coach Kim Cameron. "Defensively we weren't ready to go. Madonna had no fear and didn't back down. We need to have confidence to beat teams, and then go out and do it."
The Huskies would grow their lead to a game-high 20 points with just over three minutes remaining in the second half. Madonna employed a full-court press to close the Tech lead to 10, but the Huskies prevailed 64-52.
In addition to their 13 points, Sam Hoyt tallied a game-high five steals, and Lynn Giesler grabbed seven rebounds.
Senior Lindsey Lindstrom nearly finished with a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior Shantelle Herring finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the Crusaders.
Tech will host Finlandia Tuesday (Nov. 15).
