MARQUETTE -- The Northern Michigan women's soccer team defeated Upper Peninsula rival Michigan Tech 2-1 in double overtime on Friday (Oct. 28) afternoon. With the win, the Wildcats will host a home Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Tournament first round game on Tuesday (Nov. 1).

"I'm proud of our team," NMU coach Matt Granstrand said. "We beat a good team and it should be an advantage playing our first round GLIAC game here at home."

Senior forward Chelsea Lyons was fouled in the box late in the second extra session. Junior defender Becky Schmidt buried the game-winning goal off a penalty kick at the 104:13 mark of the game.

"Becky knows where to place her kicks," Granstrand added. "There's a reason why she takes free kicks for us."

Northern (10-5-3, 8-5-2 GLIAC) found itself down a goal at halftime after Michigan Tech's Ari Peterson banged home a goal 18 minutes into the game. Peterson picked up a loose ball in the box after a Husky corner kick.

The game-tying goal came from senior defender Missy Mohr. It was Mohr's first of the season and second of her career as she took a header pass from senior forward Chelsea Lyons.

"We had two defenders score goals today and a penalty kick," said Granstrand. "That was our first penalty kick all season."

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Baker had three saves in the victory and has played in every game this season for the 'Cats.

Michigan Tech (7-9-1, 5-9-1 GLIAC) goalkeeper MaryBeth Spoehr had six saves for the Huskies.

NMU's eight seniors were honored before the game as Jessica Baker, Brittany Buckingham, Caitlin Glendenning, Aurora Jackson, Jessica Lusardi, Chelsea Lyons, Missy Mohr and Kylee St. Arnauld played their final regular season game in a Wildcat uniform.

Game Notes:  NMU has defeated MTU in all four meetings since Tech started its soccer program last season.Schmidt's goal was her first of the season and fifth of her career.
