NMU Hockey Wildcats can't hold lead, split with Wisconsin

Like Friday night, the Northern Michigan hockey team held a 2-0 lead in the first period and like Friday night, the game was tied in the third period.  No. 17 Wisconsin took its first lead of the series with 3:43 left in the game when Derek Lee scored the game-winner and the Badgers defeated the Wildcats 3-2 from the Kohl Center.

Senior forward Justin Florek continued his strong play against the Badgers as he scored the first two goals of the game on the power-play. Florek has scored five goals and had an assist in his last four games against Wisconsin.

Tyler Barnes scored a power-play goal at 11:54 of the second period and Micheal Mersch added the equalizer five minutes later (16:21).

Senior forward Tyler Gron and junior defenseman Kyle Follmer assisted on Florek’s first goal. Freshman forward Dylan Walchuk picked up the lone assist on Florek’s second goal.

NMU outshot the Wisconsin 33-28. Sophomore Jared Coreau made the start between the pipes for the ‘Cats. He had 25 saves, including 11 in the third period.

The ‘Cats took nine penalties and killed off 8-of-9 Badger power-plays.

NMU was 2-for-7 on the power-play.

Northern hosts St. Cloud State in its opening weekend at the Berry Events Center on Friday (Oct. 14) and Saturday (Oct. 15). The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. both nights.

Game Notes: Florek has 37 career goals…NMU has won thee of its last four games at the Kohl Center…Attendance was 11,158 at the Kohl Center.
