Safety the biggest reason for ending the season prematurely
GWINN (AP) -- An Upper Peninsula school district is shuttering its varsity football program for the rest of the season because it doesn't have enough players.
The Mining Journal of Marquette reports the Gwinn Area Community Schools Board of Education voted Monday to approve the decision.
Superintendent Mike Maino says the team had just 12 players able to suit up for a game and the board agreed that wasn't enough.
There was concern that students on the team would need to play the entire game and might be susceptible to serious injury.
