IRON RIVER -- Between the bronco and bull riding, rodeo clowns as well as roping, the fans had a great time this afternoon (7/23) at day one of the U.P. Championship Rodeo.
Fans gathered to watch cowboys and cowgirls from all over the Midwest take on some of the toughest events in the sporting world.
Most people think of rodeos as a rough and tough event, which it is, but team roping is one of the more skillfull events that takes place on the circuit.
Even though men are the majority of competitors, the women more than stand their ground. For one lady in particular, it was a good day in the ring. "It was good because the steer didn't leave too hard," said Team Roping winner Carmen Schneider. "When he left, he ran really hard and I kind of questioned myself when to throw it (the rope), and I guess I made the right decision."
For Schneider, the event is more than just competing a few times a year. "We had to rope at home just about every day," she said. "Whether it's calf roping or team roping, we had to get the horses in shape."
The final show of the 44th annual U.P. rodeo championships wrapped up on Sunday (7/24).
