MARQUETTE -- (Courtesy of the USOEC) United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestlers competed at the 2011 Senior World Team Trials June 9-11 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Northern Michigan University senior Paul Tellgren (Anoka, Minn) advanced to the championship round in the 55 kilogram weight class with a bye and two decisions to face Spencer Mango (St. Louis, Mo.).

In the championship round, a two-out-of-three format, Mango took the first two matches 6-0, 0-2, 2-0 and 2-0, 4-0. Tellgren was seeded second in the bracket and qualified for trials, placing second at the U.S. Open.

"He exceeded expectations by taking second. He wrestled hard every match and took Mango to the third round. It could have gone either way," said Coach Rob Hermann.

At the 96 kg division, senior Pete Gounaridis (Leominster, Mass.) finished third due to an opponent's injury.

"Gounaridis became a member of the national team with a third-place finish. This is a big step for him and could open up a few doors along the way," said Hermann.

At 66 kg, senior Ben Sanchez (Leominster, Mass.) finished fourth after being defeated by eventual winner Glenn Garrison (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Bo Beckman (Orem, Utah) finished sixth after being defeated by the eventual runner-up, C.P. Schlatter (Massillion, Ohio).

Sophomore Mark Stenberg (Lockport, Ill.) finished fifth while freshman teammate Ethan Dondlinger (Slinger, Wis.) finished seventh after facing each other in the preliminary rounds at 84kg.

At 74 kg, Kendrick Sanders (Miami, Fla.) finished sixth with a tournament record of 2-2, Tanner Andrews (North Aurora, Ill.) was seventh with a record of 3-2 and Aaron Briggs (Tuscon, Ariz.) eighth at2-2.

For the freestyle team, senior Laura Conway (Traverse City, Mich.) placed seventh at the U.S. Open to qualify for the trials. She finished fifth, beating Emma Randall (Lady Eagle WC) in a 3-2, 4-1 decision. Advancing to the third-place match, Conway was pinned by Brittany Roberts (Gator WC/OCU).

"I was excited to face the competition at the trials because there was a world champion and an Olympic medalist in my division. This was good preparation for non-Olympic trials in July," said Conway.

Marquette Senior High School senior Erin Golston (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had a tournament record of 1-2 at 48 kg; junior Schuyler Brown (Montpelier, Va) had a record of 1-2 at 55 kg; and MSHS senior Jenna Burkert (Rocky Point, N.Y.) had a 2-2 record at 63 kg.

The non-Olympic freestyle weights of 51 kg, 59 kg, and 67 kg will be decided July 1-2 at Colorado Springs, Colo..
