The Wayne State University golf team finished in a tie for seventh place as the final day of the NCAA Midwest/South Central Regional drew to a close Wednesday evening at Cherry Blossom.
The leaders after Monday’s opening round (287), the Warriors found themselves in 10th place after Wednesday’s shotgun-start second round (311). Wayne State fought its way back into contention in the third round (301) but did not achieve a top-five finish to advance to nationals as a team.
Nevertheless, Wayne State will be represented at the NCAA Championships later this month, as Eric Johnson (Marquette, Mich.) qualified individually by finishing third. Johnson (70-74-70--214) finished five strokes behind medalist Cyril Bouniol of Abilene Christian.
Johnson totaled 10 birdies and 37 pars in the tournament, and was one of only five players to finish under-par for the week.
Steve Fedewa (Howell, Mich.) tied for 32nd (73-78-74--225), Josh Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) tied for 60th (72-80-77--229) and Jack Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) tied for 77th (73-79-80--232). Hagan Risner (Garden City, Mich.), despite nine birdies in the tournament, finished in a tie for 89th (72-82-82--236).
Abilene Christian and Central Oklahoma were declared co-champions of the Super Regional (876). Cameron (881), Missouri- St. Louis (893) and Central Missouri (893) rounded out the top five.
