ESCANABA -- Four Upper Peninsula high school senior athletes will receive scholarships from the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame. They will be recognized at the 40th annual induction banquet Saturday in Escanaba.
The four recipients will each receive $500 over the next four years.
U.P. Class D Basketball Player of the Year, Jordan Chartier of Superior Central, leads the list alphabetically. He has a 3.95 grade point average, is his class salutatorian and plans on majoring in business.
Houghton's Rachel Crane has played basketball, volleyball, figure skated and run track. She's a co-valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. She'll attend Ferris State and major in architecture.
Negaunee's Dylan McKevitt is the Miner's valedictorian with a 4.26 GPA. He's been All U.P. in cross country and track. He'll go to Cedarville University in Ohio and major in geology and engineering.
Aliisa Paquette is Munising's valedictorian with a 3.97 GPA. She'll earn 18 varsity letters in five sports when she graduates. She'll attend Michigan State, leaning toward a physical therapy degree.
Saint Ignace's Nicole Elmblad is her school's valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. Elmblad won't be able to receive a scholarship from the Sports Hall of Fame because she had a basketball scholarship from the University of Wisconsin when the winners were announced. Since Wisconsin changed its coaching staff, she has requested a release from that scholarship, though she would still like to be on the Badgers' team.
Elmblad was the Associated Press Class C Basketball Player of the Year and the U.P. Class ABC Player of the Year.
