MARQUETTE -- (Courtesy of NMU Athletics) Head Northern Michigan University men’s basketball coach Doug Lewis signed four high school seniors from the state of Wisconsin in the late signing period. Quinten Calloway, Derek Hussinger, Terry Nash and Haki Stampley have all signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball for the Wildcats in 2011-12.
Quinten Calloway is a 5-foot-11 point guard from Milwaukee Marquette High School. He averaged 14.2 points per game during his senior campaign when the Hilltoppers went 16-8. Calloway was named All-State Honorable Mention.
“Quinten’s shooting ability will spread the defense,” Lewis said. “He can shoot the three, shoot off the dribble and shoot off screens and he will be a great combination with Terry Nash.”
Derek Hussinger is a 6-foot-11center from Waukesha South High School. He averaged 10.3 points per game for the Blackbirds.
“Derek can get up and down the court with great hands and feet for a big man,” Lewis said. “His potential is unlimited and he will get better in practice everyday battling all-league center Jared Benson.”
Terry Nash is a 6-foot-1 guard. He played at Wisconsin Lutheran High School and was named Wisconsin Little Ten Conference Player of the Year after averaging 14.4 points per game. He was also named first team All-State in Division II, fourth team All-State in all divisions and first team All-Area by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. His team won the WLT and finished the season 23-3.
“I’m getting a guy who can allow us to play fast,” Lewis said. “He is a floor leader and a great defender. Everything in our system starts on the defensive end and it starts with our point guard. Terry will be great getting after other guys. He can break people down on the offensive end and get shots for himself and others.”
Haki Stampley is a 6-foot-4 guard from Milwaukee Hamilton High School. He averaged 14.7 points per game for the 20-7 Wildcats. Stampley was named fourth team All-State in all divisions and second team All-Area.
“Haki is the steal of Wisconsin,” Lewis said. “He could be playing Division I basketball but his coaches knew he would be a great fit here at Northern. He’s long at 6-4 and takes pride in shutting people down on the defensive end. He has great potential.”
NMU looks to improve from 9-17 record during the 2010-11 season.
