Three weeks after capturing X Games gold medals in snowboard cross, Americans Lindsey Jacobellis and Nick Baumgartner both grabbed World Cup victories on Thursday in Quebec.
It concludes an undefeated past month for Jacobellis, who won gold at the 2011 World Championships in La Molina, Spain prior to her X Games triumph, and captured the U.S. National title on Saturday in The Canyons, Utah.
Baumgartner finished 18th at Nationals last week, but helped teammate Jonathan Cheever on his way to the men's U.S. title. Baumgartner made a mistake going into a difficult turn on the run at Canyons, and said afterward that the only way he could have escaped was if he made a move that would have pushed Cheever into the fences. So Baumgartner went down himself.
On Thursday, Baumgartner and Cheever were in the same heat in each of the four rounds of the finals, placing first and second, respectively, each time. David Speiser of Germany finished third in the final race, ahead of Canada's Kevin Hill.
Jacobellis was followed in by Canadian Dominique Maltais, who won the first three World Cup snowboard cross races of the season. France's Deborah Anthonioz was third, and American Jacqueline Hernandez fourth.
Stoneham marked the fourth World Cup SBX race of the season; a race in Yongpyong, South Korea was canceled earlier this month due to unsafe features on the course. The next snowboard cross race is March 18 in Valmalenco, Italy.
