The Northern Michigan men’s basketball team looked completely different on Saturday afternoon compared to Thursday night’s loss to Saginaw Valley State, but came up just short against Lake Superior State (10-5, 4-4 GLIAC) losing 73-79.  NMU (6-9 1-7 GLIAC) has now lost four straight games in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Mylan Murphy’s three-point shot with 1:27 left cut the Lakers lead down to one, but that was as close as NMU would find themselves as LSSU answered right back with a three-point shot on the next possession.

Despite four Wildcats scoring in double figures, NMU couldn’t come through in the end.  DeAndre Taylor led the ‘Cats with 18 points.  Matthew Craggs was hot from downtown as he drained 12 of his 14 points from beyond the arc.  Jared Benson finished with 12 points and six rebounds, while Martin Gross chipped in with 11.

LSSU was lead by Kyle Hunt who netted 20 points, 15 being in the second half.  Michah Hudson chipped in with 11, while Justin Williams netted 13.

At the 15:13 mark in the second half, Hunt hit nine straight Laker points.

NMU was out rebounded 25-30 on the boards.  The Lakers hauled down seven offensive rebounds which lead to 12 second chance points.  LSSU shot 20-25 from the foul line for 80 percent.

The Lakers shot 51 percent from the floor and were 9 of 23 from three-point territory.  NMU shot 49 percent and made nine three-pointers as well.

NMU will next make the trip across the Mackinac Bridge and head south to face Grand Valley State and Ferris State for the second time this season.

The Wildcats will take on GVSU on Thursday (Jan. 20) at 6 p.m.  Saturday’s contest against the Bulldogs will be at 1 p.m.
