Back-to-back wins clinch 12th Annual Marquette Classic title
MARQUETTE -- After dumping Traverse City West 3-2 on Friday night, the Marquette Redmen Hockey team came back Saturday afternoon and beat Grosse Pointe North 3-1 to capture the championship of the 12th Annual Marquette Classic at Lakeview Arena.
The Norsemen opened the scoring at 12:30 of the first period. Anthony Saleh fed Brad Werenski in the slot and went five hole after Marquette goaltender Michael McAuliffe went for a poke check.
Marquette came back and scored the last three goals of the game. In the second period, after a nice McAuliffe save, Nick Weston collected the rebound, passed to a streaking Aaron Leach, for a breakaway goal at 10:06. It stayed 1-1 heading into the third period.
In the final 20 minutes, Cody Wickstrom headmanned the puck up to Kyle Carriere for the tip-in at the Norsemen blue line. Carriere continued into the zone and backhanded a pass through the crease to Easton Viitala for his second goal in as many games at 8:32.
Late in the third, the Redmen got a five minute power play that saw Brett Love hitting Bryan Erspamer for the one time in the slot with 1:24 remaining in the third.
McAuliffe made 20 saves in net for the win. Marquette outshot Grosse Pointe North 30-21 for the game. In the consolation game, Traverse City West beat Howell 4-1.
Marquette won't have much time to enjoy this one. They host Novi right back at Lakeview Arena Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern.
