Performance in AAU tourney peaks coaches interest
HANCOCK -- Another top Upper Peninsula girls basketball player has made a verbal commitment to a college. Hancock's Maria Almquist is leaning toward attending Minnesota-Duluth next fall.
Almquist excelled during the AAU trip to Florida with the Marquette Magic under coach Lisa-Coombs Gerou this summer.
According to Maria's mother, Maria was contacted by about ten Division I and ten Division II schools ranging from Central Michigan and Bowling Green in the Mid American Conference, Vermont and Fordham in the Atlantic region, to Illinois State and Florida Gulf Coast.
But with some family in the Duluth area, and liking what she sees with the program, Maria says Minnesota-Duluth is the perfect fit.
Last season for Hancock, Almquist averaged 22.5 points per game along with nearly 12.5 rebounds as the Bulldogs reached the Class D Regionals. She was named Special Mention All-State in Class D by the Associated Press and was on the U.P. Dream Team.
So Almquist plans to go from the Hancock Bulldogs to the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.
