MADRID (AP) — Pedro De la Rosa is convinced he can succeed as the second oldest driver in Formula One after signing for Sauber.

The 38-year-old Spaniard joined Sauber on Tuesday after spending the past five years as a test driver for McLaren.

De la Rosa said Thursday his motivation is "huge" and he "would not be here if I did not think I still had what it takes." He says he'll have a better idea of his chances after February's testing sessions.

The 41-year-old Michael Schumacher will be the oldest driver in F1 this season. The German and De la Rosa last raced at the 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix.

De la Rosa has competed in 72 races. His best finish was second at the Hungarian GP in 2006.

Kamui Kobayashi of Japan is the other Sauber driver.
