MARQUETTE -- The Marquette City Commission wants to see more economic development and growth.

During their meeting on Monday, members discussed the next Michigan Development Act. Under the act, five districts throughout the state offer economic incentives to bring in more business.

Marquette and Delta County want to be the sixth district, but to do it the first step is amending the current legislation. Senator Tom Casperson will introduce the amendment in Lansing before summer recess.

"I don't see a real big problem getting this moved forward," said Sen. Casperson. "In the sense that we're starting slow, we're not taking on the whole U.P. We're going to take a step at a time. I see that winning more favor down below the bridge so that we don't come out with too much all at one sweep here with this legislation."

If the legislation passes, Marquette and Delta County have to agree on the type of economic growth they're looking for. If the district is successful, economic growth could spread to other cities in the U.P.
