USOEC Wrestlers medal in Austria

MARQUETTE, Mich. – United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestlers helped Team USA take home first place honors at the Austrian Junior Open in Götzis, Austria, this weekend (March 9), with two USOEC athletes earning medals.

Winning gold for Team USA in the 55-kilogram weight class was Isaiah Varona, of Miami. In the gold-medal match, Varona faced Nikola Markovic of Serbia defeating him 3-0, 4-0.

Roman Moreno of Miami Lakes, Fla., earned a silver medal at 50 kg. Moreno faced Davit Iremadze of Georgia. Iremadze took first place 3-1, 4-2 over Moreno.

Also taking part in the event at 74 kg were Austin Barton, Phoenix, finishing fifth, and Zeke Honegger, Lake Zurich, Ill., ending in sixth place.

Team USA finished the event with 55 points. France took second with 53 and Georgia following with 43. Twelve countries took part in the event, which will be followed by a week-long training camp.
