Latest news, weather, high school sports for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Saturday saw a few inches of snow west and some sleet and rain east due to these warm temperatures. Sunday will start similarly, but Sunday night is a different story.

Sunday will again have highs in the mid 30s, so precipitation with this low pressure system will fall mainly as sleet or rain in the afternoon. Snow is possible west, but ultimately precip will be light.

The real story is Sunday night. As the low pressure center moves from our south to over downstate Michigan by Monday, we will likely see several inches of snow. Temperatures will drop to the 20s Sunday night, so that means no more rain or mix. All of the U.P. should see some snowfall, but the heaviest will be in the central counties due to lake enhancement with a northeast wind.

Six inches to 10" are likely from Baraga and Iron Counties east to Schoocraft County with lesser amounts elsewhere. Higher snow totals in excess of 10"-12" are possible in the higher terrains, like in northern Marquette County. Those areas are under Winter Storm Warnings and are surrounded by Winter Weather Advisories. This same system has Winter Storm Warnings and even Blizzard Warnings extending all the way to Kansas and Nebraska.

The snowfall will start from the south late Sunday evening and last through Monday evening. The heaviest snow will be Monday morning. Due to ample moisture and warmer than average temperatures, this will be a wet heavy snow and will make for a difficult morning commute. It will also be windy so blowing snow is a concern.

Monday's highs will be in the mid to upper 20s. There is a chance for a little bit of rain and snow mix in the far eastern U.P., but precip is likely to be on the snowy side. As the system moves away Monday night, widespread snow is likely to diminish and transition into lake effect snow that could last though Tuesday and possibly Wednesday. Monday's lows will be 10s to low 20s. Monday will start a cooling trend that should last most of the week.

On a side note, one year ago today started the warming trend that led to warmer than average and record-breaking temps for about 18 days. It got up to 81 degrees on March 21, 2012. There's no major warm up in sight for our current extended forecast!
