In fact, it will likely last through Wednesday, with a chance of it continuing all the way to next weekend. That depends on what happens Thursday with a low pressure system. Either way, it's here to stay for a while and has already brought several inches of snow from Saturday into Sunday afternoon.
The easy part of this forecast is that it has remained consistent for days. Since last week all the way through Sunday, models agree that this week is going to be very cold and will see lots of lake effect snow. The reason is a persistent northwest wind bringing in the coldest air mass of the season so far. That wind will keep lake effect snow nearly constant for the northwest wind snow belts for days. That means that through Wednesday, Gogebic County north through the Copper Country and Munising eastward along Lake Superior could see anywhere from 10" to 25" through Wednesday. Minimal amounts of snow are likely further inland. A more accurate forecast will have to wait until those days get closer.
The heaviest snow is likely to be Sunday with anywhere from 4" to 10" in the northwest wind snow belts, higher amounts likely in the higher terrains. Breezy conditions behind the low pressure system that passed us by Saturday will also produce blowing snow and keep visibility low at times, even if it's not actually snowing. It will also add significant wind chill. Highs should only be around 10 degrees. Skies will likely be partly cloudy away from the lake effect snow.
The National Weather Service has Wind Chill Advisories in effect out west and Lake Effect Snow Warnings in the northeast through Monday morning.
Sunday night's lows will be very cold in the -0s with wind chill making it feel even colder. Snow will continue.
Monday's highs will be colder in the single digits east and below zero west. That's well below our normal low temperature for this time of year. Lows will all be below zero with temps approaching -20 inland. Thankfully, winds will be weaker. Snow will continue.
Tuesday will be similarly cold. Wednesday may be a few degrees warmer. Thursday or Friday has a small chance of seeing some scattered snow with a low pressure system. If that plays out, then it should get us out of this rut of bitter coldness and non-stop lake effect snow, even if only briefly.
