PORTAGE TOWNSHIP -- The Michigan State Police received a call regarding a two-car crash on Monday evening that resulted in the death of a 65-year-old Pelkie woman.

Police responded to a crash in Portage Township on Askel Road at around 6:30 p.m. on Monday. They reported that a vehicle driven by 52-year-old Rick VanAlstine was traveling down the road when it collided with a vehicle driven by 65-year-old Gloria Karinen.

Police believe the crash was caused when VanAlstine's vehicle struck a deer that ran into the roadway, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and skidding into the oncoming lane of traffic.

Karinen was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. VanAlstine was taken to Portage Health Hospital and then transferred to Marquette General Hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash.
