LSSU Women lear why Ashland is number one

No. 1-ranked Ashland, which leads the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in scoring, shot a blistering 53.6 percent from the field to beat the Lake Superior State women's basketball team 80-41 Wednesday at Kates Gymnasium.

Last year's GLIAC Player of the Year and this year's Women's DII Bulletin Pre-Season Player of the Year Kari Daugherty led the Eagles (13-0 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Daiva Gerbec and Alyssa Miller added 17 points each. Gerbec also had a double double with 10 rebounds.

Ashland, which reached the NCAA Elite Eight finals in 2011-12, was 4-of-13 from three-point range and 16-of-23 at the free-throw line. The Eagles out-rebounded LSSU 45-23.

Raven Trammell scored 14 points and Maria Blazejewski added 12 for Lake Superior State (3-7 overall, 2-4 GLIAC). LSSU shot 27.5 percent from the field, including 6-of-21 from three-point range, and made 7-of-9 free throws.

LSSU plays host to Ohio Dominican at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 3.
