Oilers beat Women Lakers 71-51

The Findlay women's basketball team took advantage of Lake Superior State's cold first-half shooting during Thursday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener. The Oilers built a 19-point first-half lead and cruised to a 71-51 victory.

After shooting 27.6 percent from the field (8-of-29) during the first half, LSSU (1-4) trailed 37-18 at halftime. The Lakers trimmed the lead to nine points, 42-33, during the first seven minutes of the second half, but Findlay (3-0) responded with a 14-5 scoring surge.

Kayla Brown totaled 17 points and three steals, and Tai Dotson scored 11 points to lead Findlay. UF shot 43.4 percent from the field, making 3-of-13 three-point attempts. The Oilers were 22-of-28 at the free-throw line and dominated the boards, 42-34.

Kandace Crittendon totaled 17 points and five assists, and Maria Blazejewski added 14 points and six rebounds to lead LSSU. The Lakers shot 33.8 percent from the field, including 1-of-18 from behind the arc, and made 6-of-7 free throws.

The Lakers play at Hillsdale at 3 p.m. Saturday.
