NMU Mens Basketball Thumps Finlandia

The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team opened the 2012-13 regular season with a 129-52 victory over Finlandia on Saturday (Nov. 17) from the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats had seven players in double figures and all 11 players scored.
Northern jumped out to a 35-9 lead to start the game and extended the lead to 35 with 2:51 before halftime. The ‘Cats led 60-31 halftime and junior center Scooter Johnson had 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the floor. Sophomore forward Kendall Jackson had 13 at the break as NMU shot 59
percent from the floor and held the Lions to 37 percent.
A 23-2 NMU run started the second half and the lead ballooned to 50 at 83-33. NMU broke the century mark on freshman center Matt Iverson’s layup with 9:35 left in the game. NMU held the Lions to only 21 points while scoring 69 in the second half.
Jackson had a game-high 23 points on 10-for-12 shooting and added nine rebounds. Freshman guard Stephan Pelkofer scored 18 points in his first regular season action in the Green and Gold. Johnson finished with 17 points while Iverson had 15.
Senior forward TJ Cameron had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Redshirt freshman point guard Terry Nash added 12 points and seven assists. Junior forward Matt Craggs had 10 points and six rebounds while junior Joe Simon chipped in with nine and junior Michael
Smith added eight.
Keith Arnold led Finlandia with 15 points while Jon Moore added 10. The Lions shot 28 percent in the game on 16-for-57 from the floor.
Northern finished the game shooting 62 percent (48-77) from the floor and 47 percent (8-17) from the three-point line. The ‘Cats outrebounded the Lions 57-21.
NMU travels to Milwaukee over the Thanksgiving weekend to play at the Fresh Coast Classic. The ‘Cats open the tournament with a semifinal matchup with Winston Salem State on Nov. 23.
