Three United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman Wrestlers placed well at the University World Championships in Kourtane, Finland this weekend, with one athlete taking home a gold medal.

In the 55-kilogram weight class, Max Nowry of Wheeling, Ill., earned his University World Championship title by defeating Dzmitry Brychak of Belarus 6-0, 1-0 in the gold medal match.

"I had been close to winning a medal in the past at the Junior World Championships, and I just really had the drive to get something here," said Nowry. "I wanted to score on my feet and push the pace. I felt really good in the finals and wore the guy down. It was a real good day for our team. This was big for the Greco program."

Earning fifth place at 84 kg was Mark Stenberg of Lockport, Ill. Stenberg fell to Pekka Rintama Ki of Finland 0-2, 0-1 in the bronze medal match.

Toby Erickson of East Helena, Mont., who competed at 120 kg., also took fifth place. Erickson faced Longsheng Xu of China, falling 0-2, 0-1 in his bronze medal match.

Team USA finished fifth overall in the Greco-Roman competition with 36 points. Russia won the title with 50 points, followed by Turkey with 46 points and Iran with 44 points.
