The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team picked up its second win of the season and first in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a come-from-behind victory over Lake Erie College on Sunday (Sept. 16). The Wildcats won 2-1 after two second-half goals at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium. NMU is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC.
“We showed a lot of character today,” said NMU coach Matt Granstrand. “We’re a young team that was struggling and could’ve folded up the tent when we were down. We played harder down the stretch and I’m really proud.”
Freshman Tiffany Trembley scored her first goal in the Green and Gold with a corner kick 10 minutes into the second half, tying the game.
Sophomore Tevun Sellers scored her first of the season and seventh of her career with the game-winning unassisted goal from seven yards out at the 66 minute mark.
LEC (1-5, 0-2 GLIAC) opened the game’s scoring 39 minutes into the game with a header by Payten Biskupsi off a corner kick.
The ‘Cats outshot the Storm 12-10. Redshirt freshman Shelby Conard had six saves for the ‘Cats while LEC goalkeeper Megan Baldacci had four saves.
“It feels good to be headed home to play some home games,” Granstrand added.
After five games on the road, Northern returns home to host Michigan Tech on Saturday (Sept. 22). The Huskies defeated the ‘Cats 2-0 earlier this season in Houghton.
