ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP -- (Courtesy of NICE school district) Kurt Corcoran has been selected to lead the Westwood High School Girls Basketball program. Kurt was among five highly qualified candidates interviewed on Thursday, May 10.
Corcoran is a 2003 graduate of Westwood High School. Corcoran was selected as Boys JV coach in 2011-2012 and has coached the Aspen Ridge 7th grade Girls Basketball team since 2010.
In addition to his coaching experience, Corcoran is in his second year as a science teacher at Aspen Ridge School. As a teacher, Corcoran has a unique opportunity to connect with students on a daily basis--whether it is encouraging athletes to keep their grades up, reminding them to show up for an open gym workout, or being accessible to athletes during the day. Corcoran's time in the school will be a distinct advantage in his role as a head coach.
According to Jon Beckman, Athletic Director for the NICE Community School District, "Kurt is a Westwood guy, he understands our program and is excited to continue the success of Westwood Girls Basketball. He grew up in the Westwood system and understands what it takes to win. He also understands the challenges of succeeding a storied coach and will work tirelessly to ensure future success."
Board Treasurer Chris Roose participated in the interview. According to Roose, "Kurt is a great asset to the NICE Community School District. He bleeds red, white, and blue and will take this successful girls basketball program and make it great."
"Kurt was among five applicants for this coaching position, and I don't think I've ever seen such a high quality list of candidates," Roose added.
According to Superintendent Mike Haynes, "I am pleased to announce the hiring of Kurt as our girls basketball head coach. He knows the sport and has developed a relationship with the district and the students. I am confident he will provide strong leadership for our program, and I look forward to seeing him carry on the rich tradition of Westwood High School Basketball."
