MTU's Saliga wins decathlon at GLIAC Meet

Nathan Saliga highlighted day two of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships for Michigan Tech by winning the decathlon with a school record 5,999 points Thursday (May 3).

Teammate Patrick Spalding finished fourth with a personal-best 5,459 points, the third best performance in school history.

Saliga won all four running events (100, 400, 110 hurdles and 1,500) in the two day competition. Day two was highlighted by a personal-best of 12-5.5 in the pole vault. His 5,999  points breaks his previous school record of 5,858.

Both Saliga and Spalding earned All-GLIAC accolades for their performances.

The Huskies had one other student-athlete earn all-conference accolades on day two.

Nate Hood finished sixth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 22-7.75. The jump was the fourth best in school history.

Tech qualified for the finals in four events scheduled for Friday.

Anastasia Fokina qualified ninth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:49.47.

Quinn Parnell qualified in both the 100 and 200. He ran a personal-best and national provisional qualifying time of 10.59 in the 100. The time was the third fastest in school history. He also ran a personal-best of 21.62 in the 200, the eighth fast time in school history.

Dylan Anderson qualified for Friday’s final by winning his heat of the 800 in 1:52.38.

Other notable performances on day two included Bradon Kampstra’s 11th place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:11.84), and Brendan Banker’s 11th place finish in the high jump (6-3.25).

The track and field championships will conclude Friday (May 4).
