HOUGHTON -- (Courtesy of MTU Athletics) A 48-yard pass from Tyler Scarlett to Alex Elsenheimer in the second quarter stood up as the winning points for the White Team in Michigan Tech’s annual Black-White Spring Game today at Sherman Field. A crowd of 562 witnessed the White Team defeat the Black Team 7-3 in a typical defensive-oriented intrasquad matchup.
The Black Team held a 218-169 advantage in yards of total offense in the contest bolstered by senior Josh Hauswirth’s 150 rushing yards on 30 carries. Both squads found it difficult in sustaining and finishing drives, however. Each team made a touchdown saving tackle of a runner in the open field and there were three combined turnovers—one coming on an interception in the endzone.
Overall, head coach Tom Kearly called the day a success.
“This one’s just for some fun and bragging rights in the locker room,” he said. “It’s a reward for the players after three hard weeks of spring practice. I’m always glad to get out of this game with no major injuries.”
The White Team took the opening drive into the red zone before Scarlett was picked off by Kurt Lehmann in the endzone. The field position battle was finally won by the White at the 7:59 mark of the second quarter as Scarlett hit Elsenheimer in stride for a 48-yard touchdown pass. Garrett Mead added an extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Black got on the board on the final play of the opening half on a 38-yard Matt Bautch field goal.
Mead had a 37-yard field goal blocked early in the third quarter that would have extended the lead to 10-3. Instead it remained 7-3, and Black threatened to take the lead with two red zone drives in the fourth quarter. Both drives were stopped on downs.
Cole Welch was White’s leading rusher with 45 yards on just four carries. Scarlett finished his day 8-for-20 for 118 yards and a touchdown. For the Black offense, redshirt freshman Brandon Cowie was 6-for-17 for 68 yards and senior Ray Wojtala was 5-for-12 for 36 yards.
Elsenheimer, one of only four available wide receivers who played for both teams, compiled five catches for 139 yards playing nearly every snap.
Defensively, linebackers Lucas van der Laan and Justin Armstrong each made six tackles to lead the White Team effort. Linebacker Dan Perrault had six stops for the Black. Lehmann finished with four tackles and a sack to go with his interception.
The spring game wraps up Michigan Tech football’s 2012 spring season. The Huskies will open the 2012 regular season at home Sept. 8 vs. Tiffin.
