MHSAA rule will not change for Eric Dompierre

ISHPEMING (AP) -- Michigan High School Athletic Association associate director Tom Rashid says the rule that prevents 19-year-old students from playing sports isn't changing unless schools in the state support changing the policy.

Rashid says that hasn't been the case so far.

Ishpeming High School is pushing for a change to allow Eric Dompierre, who has Down Syndrome, to play football and basketball next season at the age of 19.

The MHSAA received a third request Tuesday from Ishpeming High School to have schools vote on changing the constitution.

Rashid says other schools in the state have expressed concerns about allowing waivers for 19-year-old student-athletes because the broadening definition of disabilities might create an unfair competitive advantage.
