Junior Ali Haidar tied the school record with 26 rebounds in Michigan Tech’s 71-59 win over Ferris State in the GLIAC quarterfinals Wednesday (Feb. 29). The record of 26 rebounds was set by Russ VanDuine against Northwood on Feb. 8, 1981.

Haidar eclipsed the GLIAC Tournament record of 18 rebounds and is just seven rebounds away from the record for most total rebounds in a GLIAC Tournament.

Haidar was a factor on the offensive end as well finishing with 20 points shooting 9-of-14 from the field.

"Haidar did a great job," said head coach Kevin Luke. "When he is engaged on the glass, he is getting rebounds."

The Huskies used a 13-0 run midway through the first half to lead 38-26 at halftime. Both teams scored 33 points over the final 20 minutes.

Tech shot 47-percent (20-58) from the field and held FSU to just 34-percent (20-58). The Huskies finished with a 49-30 advantage in rebounding.

Senior Mike Hojnacki turned in a great game finishing with 21 points to move up to 14th in career scoring at Michigan Tech with 1,279 points. The Milwaukee, Wis., native shot 8-of-9 from the field, 3-of-4 from deep and 2-for-3 from the line. He also grabbed five rebounds.

Sophomore Austin Armga added 14 points for Tech.

Jerrell Sanders led Ferris State with 21 points, and Kenny Brown chipped in 12.

Tech will face top-seeded Hillsdale in the semifinals of the GLIAC Tournament Saturday (March 3) in Hillsdale.
