MANISTIQUE -- An Upper Peninsula High School golfer has signed a National Letter of Intent with a Southeastern Conference university.  Mike Nagy of Manistique put his name on the solid line in a ceremony in the school's auditorium.

Nagy finished in the top ten of all four of the National American Junior Golf Association tournaments he entered last summer.  He was second at the Randy Wise AJGA event at Warrick Hills in Grand Blanc.

He's already qualified for the Michigan Amateur tournament twice.

Nagy has been a U.P. Division I golf medalist twice.

Choosing Tennessee was an easier choice than you would think.

"(I) went down there and really liked it," says Nagy. "All the people, just the whole facility and golf program and the academics.  I just kind of fell in love with it while I was down there.  The SEC has some really good players like Florida and Alabama.  They're right up there at the top."

Nagy has a 4.11 grade point average at Manistique.  He hopes to study business at Tennessee.

The volunteers' assistant golf coach is Casey VanDamme, a standout in his days at Mid Peninsula High School.

Nagy is believed to be the first scholarship Division I college athlete from Manistique since U.P. Sports Hall of Famer Ron Rubick went to Michigan State for football in 1961.
