Four MTU Women's Tennis Players Gain All-GLIAC Recognition

Michigan Tech had three women’s tennis players named to All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Teams and another receive honorable mention as the league announced its postseason awards today. Sophomores Victoria Zhilkina (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Ploy Suthijindawong (Bangkok, Thailand) both garnered All-GLIAC First Team accolades. Junior Nathalia Rondelli (Macae, Brazil) was named All-GLIAC Second Team. Junior Asel Otunchieva (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) gained All-GLIAC Honorable Mention.
BAY CITY, MI --
“This is the first time in a while that we’ve had four players honored,” said head coach Mike Axford. “It’s nice to be recognized for our success.”

Michigan Tech finished tied for second in the GLIAC regular season standings with a 7-2 record, then took second at last weekend’s GLIAC Tournament in East Lansing, Mich.

Zhilkina posted a 10-1 singles record with all her matches at No. 1. She was also 10-1 at No. 2 doubles with partner Otunchieva.

Suthijindawong compiled a 13-1 singles record during the falls season including a perfect 10-0 slate at No. 2 in dual matches. She and Rondelli were 12-3 overall as doubles partners with a 10-2 mark at No. 1.

Rondelli turned in a 10-3 overall singles record with an 8-2 mark at No. 3 singles. Otunchieva was 4-5 in GLIAC singles matches with a 3-5 mark at the No. 4 flight.

Michigan Tech concluded its 2009 fall season with a 10-3 record. The Huskies will resume intercollegiate competition in February in hopes of earning a berth into the NCAA Tournament in May.
