HOUGHTON -- There's more than just statue building going on at Winter Carnival.

Before the all night competition kicked off at 4 p.m. Thursday, the broomball rinks had plenty of action.

If you're not familiar with broomball, the game is played with a shortened duct-taped broom and a mid-sized ball.  It's a lot like like hockey.

Participants say it's a great way to get exercise while having fun.

"I love hockey and it's just being from Michigan, it just reminds me of playing hockey as a kid. It's actually just a really fun game. Everyone has fun, anyone can play. I mean, look at me! if I can do it, anyone can do it," said broomballer, Brian LaBelle.

A number of clubs and organizations at Michigan Tech have their own broomball teams, and broomball is also offered as a class.
