Homeless count

ESCANABA -- With this bitter cold weather, there's a real concern for those people who are homeless.

Wednesday marked Michigan's annual Point in Time count of the homeless.  Once a year, there is a 24-hour period to count every homeless person.  It's a way the federal government assesses an area's needs.

Nisha Coolman, the homeless advocate for the Salvation Army, says last year, she counted 57 homeless people in Delta County.

"It's hugely important.  I mean, they cancelled school because it was dangerous to be standing outside.  So right now especially, if you are even threatened or afraid you might not have somewhere to stay, please call in or come in, because we want to help you," said Coolman.

Officials anticipate counting more homeless people this year.  Agencies will try to assist them with rent assistance and emergency shelter programs in their area.
