MUNISING -- Cross country skiers gathered in Munising on Saturday for the fourth annual Eki Loppet at the Valley Spur trail head. Skiers could choose a 7-kilometer or 14-kilometer classic or freestyle race.

Trail conditions could not have been better, thanks to volunteers who spent many hours grooming the trails. Fifty-five skiers competed this year, and some of them traveled a long way for the race.

Sixty-two-year-old Tom Rulseh and his son, Johnathan, are from Three Lakes, Wisconsin. Saturday was their first Eki Loppet, and Tom won the 7-kilometer classic and Johnathan won the 14-kilometer freestyle.

"It was a great course," said Tom. "The people here in Valley Spur did a great job of grooming, laying it out, it flowed really well, and that means a lot when you're racing...coming down a hill and being able to scoot right up the next one. It's just so much fun."
