Celebrating Christmas the Finnish way

ISHPEMING -- The League of Finnish American Societies (LFAS) U.P. Chapter celebrated Pikkujoulu in Ishpeming on Sunday.

Pikkujoulu is Finnish for little Christmas. Little Christmas is a common Finnish tradition. It's a holiday celebration with friends, instead of familynormally held before or after Christmas day.

At the Elks Lodge, the League of Finnish American Societies had traditional Finnish music and dancing as well as plenty of food and items to buy. The celebration is a fun event for the whole family.

"It's a fun event. I don't dance much myself, but I sure enjoy visiting with people and hearing the music, and for that reason, it's a great time to get together with folks," said Pauline Kiltinen, Vice President of the LFAS UP Chapter.

Money raised from the dance will help fund the U.P. Chapter's other events, including Finn Fun Day in the summer.
