Shelter mold problem in Delta County

ESCANABA -- Delta County and the Delta Animal Shelter have been negotiating how to resolve what the shelter calls a severe mold issue in its attic for over a year now.  And after a recent joint meeting, there seems to be no resolution in sight.

The mold has been a problem at the shelter since the Delta Area Animal Society entered into a lease agreement with the county.

The shelter rents the building, and officials say they'd fix it, except they're not the ones who own the building.  Ryan Holm, Vice Chairman of the Delta County Board, says negotiating takes time.

Shelter officials say a contract was drawn up, but there were a lot of things in it that weren't acceptable to them.

"We have volunteers and staff members that are prone to asthma.  And they have been reacting to the mold situation here.  I can't imagine it's a good thing for our animals' health either," said Shelter Assistant Manager, Mary Blaiser.

County officials say they're still working on a solution.
