ISHPEMING -- In Ms. Pruett's kindergarten class, kids start the day with reading exercises to get their thinking juices flowing.
These kids are slowly getting adjusted to spending all day in the classroom. Their teacher, Marcia Pruett, says learning the new routine takes time.
"They are hungry and they're tired before they're actually adjusted to the full day, but like I said, today seems better than last week. So we are making small steps," said Pruett.
Pruett says going to lunch is one of the hardest transitions for kids. She says they are not used to having lunch at school. With all the new faces, many miss their moms. Kids aren't the only ones adjusting...so is Principal Brian Veale.
"It's a different challenge for transportation because we now have more kids in the bus in the mornings and making sure we feed the extra 75 kids," said Veale.
The change means more task time, but in the long run, it will benefit the little ones. Now students have an entire day full of academic activities, spending more time on subjects like math, which will prepare them for first grade.
With more hours, teachers can devote more time to the curriculum.
"We will also be able to do extended writing, which we had a hard time fitting before. Science, social studies, they have more free choice time, where they can have time to socialize," Pruett said.
As for Ms. Pruett's class, they are learning how to be full-time students but say they are taking it one day at a time.
