MARQUETTE -- There was a blending of cultures Thursday morning in Marquette as a group of Japanese residents toured the city.

Six delegates from Marquette's sister city, Higashiomi, Japan, began their day exploring Peter White Public Library. Every year for the last 33 years, Marquette and Higashiomi have exchanged delegations. Those with the organization say having the cultural exchange benefits both societies.

"I think having an international friendship between their city and ours, their people and our people, is just an ongoing life benefit," said organizer Paulette Lindberg.

The Japanese residents are staying with host families in the Marquette area during their visit. On Friday, the delegation will tour Northern Michigan University, and at 7 p.m. there will be a Meet the Delegates party at the Peter White Public Library, which is open to the public.

The delegation is expected to leave next Wednesday.
