QUINNESEC -- A possible merger between two paper manufacturers with ties to the Upper Peninsula has been called off.

Verso Paper Corporation and NewPage Corporation had been in talks to possibly combine the two producers.

Verso Paper called off the discussions. According to the president and CEO, Verso felt that it was in the best interest of the company and the stockholders to focus on other opportunities.

This included some internal products and alternative strategies.
