Things could get interesting for your Saturday forecast. Forecasts can often change greatly as the day gets closer and closer, but for about six or seven days, Saturday has been looking stormy, and now that it's upon us, it certainly looks like this forecast will verify.
As a low pressure system barrels down on the upper Great Lakes region, a cold front will bring a line of storms across the area. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk for severe weather for most of the UP. The most intense storms look like they will initiate early this afternoon, mainly impacting the central and eastern counties. As the cold front moves eastward in what will likely be a classic squall line, storms should last most of the night into early Sunday when they move out of the UP. With cold front situations like this one, however, the line of storms could be severe and produce hail and strong winds, but they will not likely last long for a given location. Rainfall totals could exceed a half of an inch. Isolated areas of potential severe storms could see even more.
As for other conditions on Saturday, the preceding warm front will make for highs in the 80s across the central and eastern counties. The passing cold front will keep highs in the 70s in the western third of the UP. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy ahead of the cold front. Winds will be breezy out of the south, but will shift out of the west after the cold front passes.
Saturday night should see continued storms along the cold front over the eastern counties. The storms along the cold front could be severe. Some showers and thundershowers could still linger over the rest of the UP, but generally the skies should be clearing up slowly overnight. Lows will be in the 60s and winds will shift out of the west and northwest.
Sunday will see very different conditions as high pressure takes over. Highs will be much cooler in the low 70s. Skies will be mostly cloudy early on and we could see some isolated rain showers. By the afternoon, skies should be mostly sunny. It will be a bit windy out of the northwest.
Sunday night will be cool with lows in the 40s and low 50s, warmest near the lakes, coolest near Wisconsin. Skies will be clear and winds will be light out of the west.
On Monday, things will warm up again to around 80 and a chance for rain enters the forecast again.
Far from the UP, the tropics are acting up again. Say hello to Tropical Storms Ernesto and Florence!
