NIAGARA, WI -- A national observance of Flag Day came into being when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation of the event on June 14, 1916.  The day did not become official until 1949 when President Harry Truman signed the legislation and proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day.
    
Florence Socha is a World War II Navy veteran who enlisted at the age of 23, working in hospitals. Now 91, Socha says she's still as proud of the stars and stripes as she was over 50 years ago.

"I was proud to be an American, and Flag Day is always one part.  One part of it," said Socha.
