MUNISING -- Alger County residents came out to show their support for pets Saturday afternoon at the animal shelter's open house.

The open house went from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m, and featured live music, a barbecue and a raffle. One of the main purposes of the event was to raise funds for the animals' veterinarian bills, but organizers also say the event helps reintroduce the facility to the community.

"Well, I think it's really important to keep this on the public's attention, keep it on their screen, so to speak, because unless you're familiar with the problem of unwanted pets or stray pets, you may not be familiar that that kind of stuff can happen in our own community," said shelter volunteer Andrew Bek.

On June 25, the shelter will host dog training classes for both the volunteers at the shelter and the public.
