ISHPEMING -- An Ishpeming man is behind bars on Thursday for assaulting his wife.

Ralph Eugene Emanuelson, 36, is alleged to have held a knife to his wife's throat and then threw her to the floor. The incident happened on Tuesday in Ishpeming. The woman reported the alleged assault later that day. Ishpeming police then went to see Emanuelson at his parents' home, just before 4 p.m., on CR 581. As an officer approached the home, he heard a gunshot, police said. Emanuelson apparently shot himself, suffering a minor wound. He was treated at a hospital and then taken to jail.

Emanuelson is charged with domestic violence third offense and felonious assault. He'll be back in court on May 29 for a preliminary hearing. The Marquette County Sheriff's Department and Ishpeming Township Police assisted on the scene.
