MARQUETTE -- With the increase of meth busts in the Upper Peninsula, there is wonder about the effects of meth on a person.

Medical professionals say meth is a central nervous system stimulant drug that changes the chemistry of the brain. Addiction specialist, Dr. John Lehtinen, says meth tricks the brain.

"You really don't know what effect it's going to have on a given individual as far as what it's going to end up doing, and so that's the danger of it.  People can think, well, I can use it.  I have control of it.  The reality is you don't know, and if you're one of those that's going to get addicted and you've had a substance abuse problem with other substances, then your really at a lot higher risk," said Dr. Lehtinen.

People can create a meth mixture with different drug substances.  Lehtinen also says the psychological effects can last a long time.
