It'll be held Saturday across the country

ESCANABA -- It's the 20th anniversary for the U.S.P.S. Stamp Out Hunger food drive, and it'll be held Saturday across the country. Postal carriers will be picking up not only mail but any canned goods or non-perishable food items.

It's as easy as leaving them in a bag by your mailbox. The food then goes to that community's food pantry. In Escanaba, the Salvation Army, St. Vincent's, and the alliance against violence and abuse will get the food. Just make sure it's not expired.

"If you're cleaning out your pantry and you're giving out something that's already expired, thinking, well, somebody can always eat this, they're not allowed to take that by law. They have to throw it away, so that's not going to feed anybody," said United Way Executive Director Julie Mallard.

Don't be alarmed if you see someone other than your letter carrier picking up the food. There will be volunteer crews to assist postal workers this Saturday.
