MARQUETTE -- As a longtime Northern Michigan University president leaves, a new one emerges.
NMU Alumnist, David Haynes, will be taking over as the new president come Monday.
Former President Les Wong says Haynes will be a great addition because he knows the students and the community.
"He's going to do a good job, I think he's ready for it. He's excited about it. He certainly knows who we are and what we do. I think the university will be very well served by him," said Wong.
Wong feels David Haynes will transition into his new position easily, especially with his experience as political advisor. Haynes also had a leading role in government having worked with politicians.
Tom Baldini attended school with Haynes. He has also worked closely with him and says Haynes will continue pushing the school in the right direction.
"High energy, he pushes and that's David, but that's the way David's always been. People that know him, know that's David. He will focus and says, here's what our agenda is, what are we going to do," said Baldini.
Although he's never planned for this, Haynes is honored for the opportunity.
"This is an incredible place to live with amazing people. This university is filled with talented, dedicated people. The best and the brightest in the country come here to do what we do, educating young people. I'm just delighted to be part of that and to be in the community," said Haynes.
