Changes for state prison perimeter security

The changes will save more than $13 million

Starting April 1, the Michigan Department of Corrections is doing away with 24 hour perimeter security vehicle patrols.  The patrols by armed officers will still occur, but at random intervals.

The change is expected to save the MDOC $13.2 million per year.

Corrections officials say it will not result in reduced security and will create a more efficient use of staff time.  Over the past several years, the MDOC has made security improvements such as stun fencing, lighting and video cameras on the perimeter.

Critics of the change have said it will make it easier for people to toss weapons or cell phones over the fence and could put lives at risk.
