MARQUETTE -- There could be new life for an old railroad line in Humboldt Township.

Humboldt wants to restore and reuse a two-mile stretch of rail line near M-95 and US-41 to allow for business use.  Kennecott Eagle Minerals company also has interest.  They plan to use the rail line to ship iron ore to Canada.

Tuesday night, the Marquette County Board of Commissioners voted to support Humboldt Township.

A deal between Cliffs Natural Resources and Kennecott is still being discussed.  Part of this land is also used by the Iron Ore Heritage Trail which would be affected by this move as well.

"This was about Humboldt Township trying to obtain the rail rights, not for Rio Tinto Kennecott projects or trying to do anything against Cliffs Natural Resources as well. This is about providing  rail service to our industrial development in Humboldt Township," said Humboldt Township Supervisor, Joe Derocha.

The board also swore in new county board member Steve Pence who was unanimously voted to fill the vacancy left by Jim Cihak.
